My family has been in the crane business for 109 years, and my personal mission is to ensure that Bigge Crane and Rigging continues to thrive under private ownership for the next century. With 31 years of full-time experience in this industry, I am dedicating the final chapter of my career to a cause that benefits us all: making the crane industry safer for every stakeholder. As a steward of this field, my goal is to strengthen the industry for every crane rental and crane-owning company out there.
Safety has always been a core value for those of us in this business. That’s why I’m reaching out to you, because together, we can achieve so much more. My request is simple but vital let’s work collectively to raise the safety standards of our industry.
Owners who’ve spent decades in this business have generally seen it all and have accepted the notion that when you have been at it long enough, accidents will happen. Though that has been true in the past, I am here to challenge that mindset and challenge all of us to think bigger.
The New Standard
I’m calling on all crane owners and crane-owning companies to join in setting a new benchmark: not just making cranes among the safest equipment on any job site but making the crane industry the safest sector in the construction world.
- Is this a tall order? Absolutely.
- Is it achievable? Without a doubt.
Lessons from the Refining Industry
If you’re looking for safety inspiration, consider the refining industry. Decades ago, the top players in refining revolutionized safety by making it #1 core value. They took an industry known for its inherent dangers, boiling oil to create highly flammable products, and transformed it into one of the safest sectors in construction and plant maintenance. Those who failed to adopt this safety-first approach didn’t survive. The lesson is clear: embracing safety is not just about protecting lives—it’s about securing the future of our industry.
What We Have
The refiners may have money, more resources, and greater sophistication, but we in the crane industry possess something just as powerful: a shared passion for our work, a disciplined mindset, resilient hearts, and an unshakable commitment to the health and longevity of our profession. My mission is rooted in service, there is no greater way to serve than to make our industry safer for our teams, our customers, and the general public.
Our Responsibility
This industry has given us so much. While we can never fully repay what we’ve gained, we can give back by committing to safety for future generations. My mission is simple: to leave this industry safer than I found it. Open Source Crane Safety is the first step in that mission.
How Can You Participate?
Start by posting something that is effortless for you but beneficial to the community of safety stewards. For those who are more ambitious we welcome thorough and thoughtful comments that are to the benefit to all crane owners. Every contribution matter, no matter how big or how small. Teh purpose of this journey is inclusion, and all productive comments and content are welcome
Together, we can build a knowledge base that benefits not only individual companies but also the wider construction ecosystem.
Together, We Will Make a Difference
This is our chance to redefine safety in the crane industry. It’s our responsibility, and together, we can achieve it. Let’s work side by side, as equals in this mission, bound by our shared commitment to safety.
